Centigram Communications was the manufacturer of the popular VoiceMemo voice mail systems, was incorporated in Delaware in 1991, and was preceded by a company incorporated in California. Centigram was sold in June of 2000 to ADC Telecommunications of Minnetonka for $201 million in cash and stock. On May 8, 1998, Mitel Networks acquired the assets of the Customer Premises Equipment voicemail business of Centigram Communications Corporation for $22 million. In October, 2001 ADC sold the Service Provider voice mail business to SS8 for $45 million.

The Centigram VoiceMemo voice mail product line that addressed the CPE market has evolved into the Mitel NuPoint Unified Communications system. The product line that was targeted at the Service Provider market also referred is now part of SS8.

Mitel Networks' NuPoint unified voice messaging system and the SS8 messaging products share the common heritage of growing out of the Centigram Communications voice mail product line. Centigram was divided into two divisions, one that focused on Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) and the other on the Service Provider market.
The CPE division was purchased by Mitel and initially run as Baypoint Innovations. Later, that name went away and the product line became known as NuPoint Messenger from Mitel Networks. The new Unified Messaging (UM) products are SIP-based and run on Linux servers but have the same user look and feel as the traditional Centigram product.
The Service Provider product line stayed with Centigram and the company was subsequently sold to ADC. ADC spun this product line out as its own company (along with some other products, most notably a legal intercept line) and became known as SS8. SS8 still markets an enhanced version of the traditional voice mail product line which has had continued improvements.
